Central Coast Dental Hygienists Society Presents

Using silver products to arrest caries – what every hygienist should know

The antimicrobial use of silver compounds pivots on the 100-year-old application of silver nitrate, silver foil, and silver sutures for the prevention and treatment of ocular, surgical, and dental infections. However it’s approval for use in dentistry in the US is new. This course will provide evidence-based information on the efficacy of two silver products in the management of dental caries – silver diamine fluoride and silver nitrate.

Course Objectives:

  • Discuss the history of silver products in dentistry
  • Describe the action of silver in arresting caries
  • Describe the efficacy of silver products in arresting caries
  • Describe the application process along with limitations of each product
